Pg Dato SS Dr Haji Mohamad @Zairis MS; the Brunei Darussalam awardee of 2008 SEA Write Award. His book "Rinduku" comprises 50 poems of variety of issues.

Poem reading was part of the prog Majlis Doa Kesyukuran. While other guests enjoying the food, some veterans delivered poems. Haji Jewawi, strong man from Astrawani.

There's a Malay proverb " ke mana tumpahnya kuah kalau tidak ke nasi" meaning whatever done by a family will be followed by their siblings. Pg Dr's daughter following his father's step to become a well known poet.

Something to ponder from sajak and speeches..... the guests - senior go'vt officer, professor, university lecturer and SEA Write Awardee.

Makan time...... everybody enjoyed the food.

Go to Thailand and stay at Oriental Bangkok. You will find suites named after great writers; Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward and James Michener. Suites in the River Wing have also been named after various authors such as Graham Greene, John le Carré and Barbara Cartland, to name a few. During its history, great authors have either stayed in or visited the hotel.

The types of works that are honored vary, and have included poetry, short stories, novels, plays, folklore and scholarly and religious works.

The ceremonies are held in Bangkok, with a member of the Thai royal family presiding. The ceremonies have featured some notable guest speakers, including Iris Murdoch, Peter Ustinov, Jeffrey Archer, James A. Michener, Gore Vidal, William Golding, Rita Dove and Paul Theroux.

Pengiran Dr hoped local writers from all generations get the chance to be in his shoes as it is such an honour to represent the country. He further hoped local writers will be more creative and innovative in their works and their works will be translated into different languages for Asean and other international countries.

ABOUT A FRIEND

He's my friend; a retired gov't officer dealing with gov't newspaper. Now he's putting all effort to writng. People usually asked: should the writers have beard to show their maturity ?

Ini geng makan who're also writers. Some said ilham turun bila makan yang sedap-sedap. I agree cos many of my writings base on makan; the subject most people like to read.

My long time friend Pg Dato SS Dr Haji Mohamad. He's like old day, friendly and talkative though he's already in high gov't position as Deputy Education Minister.

The venue: VIP Lounge Resqun Hotel
Date : 25 October 2008
Function: Majlis Kesyukuran Penganugerahan SEA Write Award

I was invited to the above function by Pg Dato Seri Setia Pengiran Dr Haji Mohamad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman. Sitting around me were previous SEA Write Awardees, prominent writers, penyair and those who have link with sastera; Director and and officers from Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Pg Dr is the 23rd person from Brunei Darussalam receiving this prestigious Writing Award presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhom, the third child of Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand, on 25 September 2008.

Pg Dr Haji Mohamad is a long time friend. We were together in 1969 during racial riot in Malaysia. He was studying in Kolej Islam Klang then while I attended a year course in Universiti Malaya. We stayed in a same hostel behind the Awang Alak Betatar building (residence.) Jalan Ampang Kuala Lumpur. He was lost for almost a week during the Malaysia Malay-Chinese conflict. We prayed and hoped for the best. Eventually, after perintah berkurung, he showed up and ironically he said he was rescued by a Chinese family.

He is still like the old good days but I have to put some respect especially in official function where protocol is observed. He is now our Deputy Education Minister. Congratulation tangahnya (that’s how we called ourselves

MASSAGE STORY

My Ole Ole PP story this week is about massage; to be broadcast on 29 October. What's ur perception when a mention massage ? It's depend what's in ur heart.

“Kediaku mengaga tukang urut” kata seorang teman. Semua mata memandang arahnya. Ada jua senyum kambing. Teman atu mengerti apa maksudnya. Ia terus bekurapak. “Bukan beurut arah bini-bini. Beurut banar-banar bah” sambungnya lagi.

“Siapa mengucap kita beurut arah bini-bini. Perasaan banar kita ani eh.

“Kitani baru lapas mengerjakan ibadat puasa, mencari pahala. Kenapa tah pulang mencari dosa” Ia kelihatan agak serius.

“Jangan marah eh, acah-acah saja tu. Tau jua kami kita inda mengaga tukang urut bini-bini atu. Tempat orang bukan Islam tu” Kawan ani bagaikan menjernihkan suasana.

“Berabis jua kita beraya atu, sampai berurut” mencelah pula satu suara.

“Umur ani bah. Kitani ani tumpang gembira saja. Musim kitani dulu mana jua macam ani” Panjang cerita kawan pencen yang seorang ani.

“Kenapa kita inda beurut arah pecucuan atu ?”

“Apa pandai abis diorang. Bukan kan mengandurkan urat, kancang tia pulang. Ada jua yang ku suruh menjunyak belakang. Tapi membari ijap. Pulangtah tulang kitani ani rapuh. Baik jua pecucuan atu inda barat. Mun inda kesilahau tah pulang”

“Kediaku lain pulang nyanta” bersuara pula seorang rakan pencen.

“Apa kita suruh ?” Dengan soalan itu masing-masing membuka telinga. Tentu ada kelainan selain memicit badan.

“Kediaku mengaga kadai runcit atu daulu. Membali tah ku dua tiga buting angkup. Mun pecucuan datang ku suruh diaorang mencabut uban. Nyaman rasanya tangan-tangan alus atu memigang-migang rambut kitani. Mata abis diaurang ani tarang. Bila mencabut uban sebuting sebuting, bukan mengangkup serumpun.”

“”Nyanya bila disuruh mencabut uban ani, diajar tah bisai-bisai” mencelah satu suara.

“Kenapa kan ?”

“Uban atau di atas kepala. Perlu diajar pecucuan atu mencabut baik-baik. Jangan diulah-ulahkan kepala kitani. Membari tulah” Kawan ani memberi alasan.

“Atu sudah tantu tu. Di sana jua ada kemesraan. Mun sudah rapat mua diorang arah kitani kerasahan bah nafas pecucuan atu.” Kawan pencen ani meluahkan pengalamannya.

“Kan halnya, cerita kita beurut antadi ani, ke mana tah kita aga ?” Si kawan ani mengulang kembali cerita berurut selepas Hari Raya.

“Aku sebenarnya malar beurut. Sebulan sekali atu inda mis kecuali bulan Ramadhan dan Syawal ani. Kadang-kadang dua kali sebulan. Tempatnya atu inda berubah-ubah. Sama saja. Jadinya tukang urut atu pun tau. Mun belalih-lalih inda bisai urutannya. Ia tah kadang-kadang cincai. Saya lebih suka beurut arah tukang urut kampung. Tukang urut yang inda meiklankan diri bis sidia. Kadang-kadang ku bawa ke rumah. Di rumahtah beurut.”

“Atu siuk tu, berapa tah bayarannya ?”

“Sadang-sadang. Kitani puas ati. Abis sidia pun puas ati. Mun panjarnya atu inda berapa, jara abis durang tu. Inda lagi mau dilagau. Kenapa kan…? Kan ikut beurut abis kita ?” Ia menyoal kembali.

“Ada jua rasanya kan ikut. Tapi aku ani penggali. Keriak-keriak saja ku karang” Ia memberi alas an kenapa inda pernah mengaga tukang urut.

“Inda jua eh. Bukannya megelitik. Berurut bah. Mun kita kan mencuba aku menalipaun. Ari biasa bisai. Ujung minggu atu banyak orang membooking.”

Teman yang diajak atu inda menjawab. Tapi dari air mukanya menampakkan persetujuan. Mungkin banyak cerita darinya bila mengalami kena urut atu ani.

Who's getting stress. Yang massage atau yang kena massage ? In big cities tukang urut is not like in Brunei who based on experience rather than beauty.

Happy face ....... U will come again when receiving this treatment.

A lot of reflexology centre in Brunei. You could choose one. Its good to have reflexology especially after Hariraya outings.

GASTRIC OH GASTRIC

In My column, Katak Atas Tempurung this week I wrote about “seasonal sickness” especially during Ramadhan. Some excuse themselves for not fasting. The reason: they got Gastric. But the same persons had a “merry go round” during Hariraya open houses. No wonder some complained having stomach problems. How do they cure? They went from one clinic to another clinic. At the end, not satisfy with the treatment, they seek the help of bomoh; not knowing the medicine taken took time to take effect. At the of the day, bomoh got the credit.

Agak lawak juga bila mendengar orang didampingi penyakit gastrik dan penyakit perut bila menjelang Ramadhan. Tidak boleh berlapar kata mereka. Jika lapar perut meronta.

This is Ashraf, Pelangi DJ. He's nothing to do with the "seasonal sickness" The pic just want to show how people "serang" whatever right infront of them especially during Hariraya open house.

GE Final Sprint Seminar

A attended the final sprint seminar on selling life insurance last week. It reminds us as Life Planners that there’re only a few weeks left before 2008 curtain close. We have to struggle to maintain the yearly target. One thing I learn from the seminar was that people bought insurance policies because of fear of death and the feeling of love to your love one whether they’re husbands/wives, children…

How much coverage do you need? If you're going to buy life insurance, make sure you've got enough. There is no simple answer to how much coverage is enough. Some planners say you need enough insurance to replace five to seven years of your salary. If you have young children or significant debt, you should bump up your coverage so you have enough to replace as much as 10 years of your salary, they say. That would mean a person making $50,000 a year should have anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000 worth of coverage or more.

Remember, the sole purpose of life insurance is to replace your income in case you die, so that your dependents can maintain their current lifestyle. Factors to consider include whether the surviving partner will have childcare expenses if one partner is out of the picture. Do you have other assets on which to draw? Will your children be out of the nest soon? These, and many other factors, influence the decision on how much coverage you need.

So go to your GE Insurance Life Planner and ask for free consultation and advice.

YAYASAN SHHB HARIRAYA GATHERING

I was invited to Hariraya gathering at ICC on 13 October 2008 organised by Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Big turnout with His Majesty and entourage gathered with Yayasan volunteers and starategic partners. In the titah, His Majesty said the issue of poverty in the country is not as serious compared to other nations, but it can be managed better through the use of natural resources. His Majesty noted in a recent article in the World Bank's "World Development Report 2007" that agriculture can help reduce the poverty rate as much as four times compared with other economic sectors. His Majesty also lauded the role of volunteers which has grown to a strong 564 member team since 2005. On Yayasan starategic partners. Yayasan realises that it cannot operate on its own without the support of government agencies and other non-government organisations Through these strategic alliances, skills of human resources and financial assistance can be maximised for effective development of these programmes. His Majesty said that based on the need, His Majesty has consented to the setting up of a National Council on Social Issues to handle pressing issues and help facilitate programmes by relevant agencies to tackle the situation in a more effective and organised approach.

Yayasan teachers involved in ushering the guests into their seats at Plenary Hall ICC. His Majesty The Sultan lauded the efforts made by the foundation in setting up a volunteer unit which has grown to a strong 564 member team since 2005.

HM arrival greeted by members of the stretegic partners. The monarch noted that as a social institution, Yayasan cannot operate on its own without the support of government agencies and other non-government organisations.

Everybody was waiting for the best part of the gathering.... makan.

We had Glutinous Rice Roll with Red Beans, Beef Lung Rendang, Buttered Spring Chicken, Seafood Sambal Noodles, Lamb Wellington, Soft Roll with Egg and Corned Beef (Roti Dayang and Puff stuffed with Feta Cheese, Spinach and Pine Seed. How's that ?

Addation to those menu we had Pineapple and Almond Pudding with Cinnamon Honey Sauce, Teh Tarik and soft drinks.

Stand still, saluting the national anthem, Allah Selamatkan Sultan.

This is the best memento, pen with royal emblem on it.

The paper bag also contained big slice of cake put in a container with royal emblem. It really was a memorable gift.

Yayasan strategic partners put up display of their activities. The Sultan with keen interest was briefed by Dato Paduka Haji Alimin.

Pusat Ehsan with HM's daughter herself as a person responsible for the running of the institution had contributed to the well-being of sector of society that need help and guidance.

Waiting for HM arrival into their booth. The pictures displayed were those activities on helping the Tsunami victims in Aceh.
Keen interest from young visitors. Brunei with Yayasan and non-governmental institutions were first to deliver help to Aceh Tsunami victims.

HARIRAYA HERE IN BRUNEI AND SINGAPORE

I received 10 Hariraya open house plus one wedding invitation. I only miss one. This is one of them. The house belong to my friend, Ghani Pg Metussin at Madang. Inside and outside it just like a garden. So cool and peaceful.

Going inside we were served with variety of food as well. Kek, biskut, mee, satay and many more. At one corner Ghani showed me a real batang buruk ( not a biskut) but already design nicely as part of the decor. I took it from Serasa beach, he said

This house at Jalan Sungai Hancing just beside the Indonesian Emberssy belongs to Pg Dr Haji Amir, the owner of the Sekolah Nusa Laila Puteri. The house was so huge with big big sattees. You could see the brand.

I enjoyed the food served by another family friend, Nurrashid Haji Musa at Kampung Sungai Buluh; the combination of Brunei and Singapore menus. And the home decor, I marked it plus plus. See the khat at the back. I like it very much.

When we passed the front gate my brother in law from Kota Kinabalu whispered to me how many people stay in the house. I said only 3 plus the servants and helpers. He could not beleive cos in the garage there're more that 10 cars of the variety of make. I said this is a typical Bruneian; having a lot of cars. I considers he's just ordinary middle class government pensioner. The house belongs to my former workmate, Haji Said. in Kampung Sungai Buluh.

SECOND WEEK OF HARI RAYA
So long Syawal is still around, people keep on celebrating Hariraya. That’s the happening in Brunei. Friends and relatives organize open house. So are government departments. What do you see during open house invitations ? Food.. food… and food….A lot of food. An open house also means giving a chance to see the interior decorations of the hosts. To those who want to build a house or renovate your home there’re a lot of options or samples taken from what you see.

In my weekly Katak Atas Tempurung I wrote about a different prospective of Hariraya by Muslims in Singapore; the city state. How they celebrated, where they stay and what options they have to overcome the rising cost of living in a big city.

SYAWAL SCHEDULES

Al-Qur'an usually becomes the "head" of the barang hantaran. It signify the important of Islamic religion in raising a new family.

Here is the barian. The father briefed menghantar barian members what were to be delivered to the girl family side; the barian, the belanja hangus and those gifts and so forth.

Husband and wife wearing sedondon green banana leaves baju, brought barang hantaran. This is how Bruneians organise family function; helping hands from sister and brother in law.

The waiting is so long. If I have wings I will fly right now. That's the feeling of the husband to be.

Menanti saat bahagia. Penantian yang sangat panjang. After this u cannot decide anything by yourself. Your husband is there to share and make decisions .
Touch my heart. The beating is much faster, said the bridegroom. In Brunei, future husband has to attend mariage classes. The subject of course is how to build a new good and happy family.
