Ampex video tapes
Yesterday 12th June, I bumped into this near RTB Video Library. Files of video tapes were there. I asked the workers what they were going to do with the tapes. "Mau buang " they said. So they wanted to dispose these tapes. ("lupuskan" that the right word in audit term)
When TV Brunei was introduced back in 1975. these video tape were used. It's heavy. My Production Assistat always grumbled cos she had to bring the tapes to and back from location. That was part of her duty. Compare with tapes nowadays which are much much smaller in size.
We used to name the video tapes as Ampex tapes. Ampex is an American electronics company founded in 1944 by Alexander M Poniatoff. The name AMPEX is an acronym, created by its founder, Alexander M Poniatoff, which stands for Alexander M. Poniatoff Excellence.
After working for almost 30 years in RTB, you felt sad looking into this hundred of tapes put into the lorry for disposal. Inside the library there almost no space to put the incoming tapes. Just like a four deck ship. I heard some tapes are sent to Australia or new Zealand for dubbing into new tapes. That cost a lot. But the content, if cannot be salvaged is more expensive.
