HARIRAYA GREEN PACKET

Sabrina, my second cucu. We brought her along during hariraya visits. Lucky she was not manja, not crying. In fact relatives berabut kan mengipak.

She's 1 year old this October. reading from her eyes, she may think what's all this crowd. She won't understand why the parent put her nice gown, why the houses were decorated. why so many containers on the tables. Were they pemainan like those given to her at home ?

She keeps on thinking. Why member of family also put up nice baju kurung ? Why her sister so happy bejabat with people around. In 2 years time she will insya Allah active like the sister.

That green packet she holds.... Learning by experience. Next year she will looking forward to receiving this packet. She will learn the value of the paper inside the packet.

As it is now, the packet is just like any other paper or pemainan given to her. This is the time to groom her Islamic values.

HARIRAYA GREEN PACKETS

For the children and the young ones visiting parent’s homes or parent’s friends’homes mean getting green packets. Those green packets contain money. I know Chinese also have their own red packets during Chinese New Year called ampau. I do tell the young, the green packets are not ampau but sedekah or duit raya. Years back, average duit raya was one dollar per packet. With current global economic don’t know if it increases. It can’t be 50 cents. But some put $5.00 or $ 10.00 depends to whom it is given. A nini will not hesitate to give the cucu ten dollars per green packet.

Overall children and the young are happy. When it is time for them to leave after bersalaman mulih they’re given green packets. Now, what’s “the official age” of getting green packet. I think most people will stop giving green packets to someone who has completed their secondary education. But sometimes appearance cannot tell. There’re those 14-15 years look like 18-19 years old and otherwise. We had a big laugh when one pin-size anak kemanakan received a green packet. She has already two children. But those unlucky grown up 13-15 years cannot complain. You don’t ask the guests why you didn't receive any green packet because that is just a rude thing to do.

So there’re things to learn during hari raya visits. Tell children to say terima kasih whenever they receive green packet and alhamdulillah when they open the packets. And important thing to do- don’t just keep the money and dump away the packets. Sometimes the packets contain the hadis and Quranic verses. Put them in a nice dustbin or if possible burn them.
